What a Year

Hey out there! What a tumultuous year it has been… It’s been such a mix of emotions this year with the ever changing landscape that is the Young’uns. The past ten years with Don have been amazing, his talent brought new heights to the sound of the band and has been an inspiration to me to always seek for the best in playing and performing. Shane also brought his enthusiastic, perfectionist bass playing to the table these past few years and the three of us took the music to a place it never has been before. It was a privilege sharing the stage with them. I wish them both the best in the future and I’m sure we will still play the odd gig here and there moving forward.

As this year winds down, I’m so happy to see Brad back! It was like finding a long lost brother and its been a great experience reconnecting with him. The reunion will take us past 27 years! Welcome to the band Steve! He has also given us a different musical view and the exploration of the “new” band has rekindled the inspiration to find new sounds we have not heard before. For right now it’s been hectic juggling all the different band members week to week but I know things will settle down moving forward.

Steve and I also play with Josh as Forty Foot Fred when Brad is doing his gigs with Linus, but I think its a great way to stay creative and fresh when the Young’uns get together. Forty Foot Fred and Linus, albeit similar to The Young’uns are just as entertaining to watch! If you get a chance, go check them out. I’m looking forward to 2017 and will see you out there! Come check out all our bands for some great nights of Rock and Roll…

The “Young’uns”

Hey there, all you beautiful people.

Hope everyone is getting the most out of the 2-month sweat-fest that this summer has been so far. Heading into the home stretch of August, I just have to say that I’m amazed at how much fun this summer has been, and we still have another month of it left (probably September as well weather-wise, we all know where we live). We’ve made some new friends and found new venues that we’re slowly working into our schedule, and things are looking up well into 2016. Funtastic was once again mind-blowing, and I’m not afraid to admit I still get stage-fright in a big way before slinking behind the safety of that drum kit. Was an incredible turnout this year, as it usually is. And the fact live music seems to be on a bit of a rise again is pretty radtastical. Pretty excited, as well as grateful for being where we are right now.

It’s taken a lot of work to get here, but looking back at the past year, it’s definitely been worth it. Our journey over this last year and a half has been a total rebuild, and the phrase “tip of the iceberg” really has become an analogy that pertains to this whole crazy ride. It’s 90% preparation, which makes the end result that much more rewarding and fun. We spend more time than ever practicing and learning new songs, which if you’ve seen us in the last few months, I’m sure you’ve witnessed a few examples of songs that NONE of us would have ever thought we’d be doing. But it’s all been fun, and we’ve made them feel like “us” somehow. Example: Witnessing Timmeh belt out material like Madonna is simply awesome and makes us smile (and giggle, let’s not kid ourselves, it’s all pretty freaking funny), and I’m personally proud at how much we’ve grown, and how far we’ve taken this band. We have arguably the greatest job in the world. Maybe save for the whole packing up and carting around our own gear thing. Hahaha… But maybe that’s the part that keeps you humble. Takes the air out of your head and reminds you that you’re not Mr. Bigtime Rockstar (and that you’ve got a few birthdays on your permanent record, haha). Doesn’t take away the high you get on stage though. That’s just there no matter what.

We’ve definitely got some mileage out of this band name, that’s for sure. But even now, when we could just as well put quotations around it, I don’t think any of us see any signs of it ending anytime soon. Summer continues to be all sorts of rad to us, including O’Flannigan’s Pub for a women’s UFC-fueled 3-night party, a random and very successful one-night show at The Mule, and heading into a long-awaited weekend at one of our favorite dance-floors at The Blue Gator. Fall is looking to be a blast between returning to The Blue Grotto in Kamloops (consistently one of our favorite places to play) after being gone since early June, as well as a lot of fall festivals and private events, including weddings for friends. Not to mention all of our second time around stints this winter in places such as The Gunbarrel Saloon at Apex Mountain, and our long time favorite nut-house Snowshoe Sam’s.

Anyways, everyone. In my usual ranty-tangenty, shut-the-frig-up-already fashion, I guess I just want to say from the bottom of our road-weary hearts: Thank you. Thanks for making this something that we still somehow get to do. And before I forget, keep an eye out for a few changes as I’m giving us a bit of a facelift in the logo department. Which means most likely some new merchandise and t-shirts to follow (and hopefully some of the ever-popular hoodies too. I know I need one as well, haha).

See you all soon. Much love to everyone <3 and keep up the support of live music! -Shane, Tim & Don

Pumpkin Spice Blog Post

Hey, everyone!

We hope you all had a freaking amazing summer! We’re coming off of one of the best and busiest summers we’ve had in a very, very long time. We’ve made new connections, met lots of new friends, and have found a ton of new places to play, along with our favorite venues. We’ll be traveling around BC soon to new places such as The Regent in Revelstoke and also The Cariboo Hotel in Quesnel. Firsts for us! We also just recently started playing at a place that’s quickly become one of our new favorite venues (second time around for myself): O’Flannigan’s Pub in downtown Kelowna. Some of the best crowds we’ve played to, and a great vibe to a room as well. Loved it! Our fan base has grown exponentially this year, and we couldn’t be more excited about the band’s direction and new-found energy! Shane Sperling has been a driving force since he joined, and we’re lucky to have found him. Don’t tell him I said that though, it’ll give him a complex. Hah!

So, fall is officially upon us, and the temperature is dropping quickly.. But we’re looking forward to what’s ahead for the fall and winter months this year. Pubs, clubs, and private events are officially in full swing. We’ve got a much needed break this coming weekend to recharge, and then we’ll be back at it for some big roadtrips in new places. The truck will need some serious winter treads for this season!

We’ve added some content as well to the site. Updated the page to include an up to date song list (also downloadable in hard copy), added some more content (with even more to follow), and even added an Instagram widget on the home page. Follow us (@theyoungunsband) and feel free to tag yourself at gigs. We have had the greatest collection of fans and friends over the past 25 years of this band’s history and are finally reeeeeally getting into the whole social media aspect of it all (hence my second blog post ever, haha). And we should really give a shout out to Stacey from Stacey Smith Photography for all of the great shots she’s snapped of us over the past year. She’s done a great job of not making us look like a bunch of flailing dorks, hahaha.. Check her out!

And I just heard yesterday that we’ve been nominated again for best local music group in Okanagan Life’s Best in the Okanagan! We were proud to take that title home last year and would be ecstatic if we got even a fraction of the votes we did last time around. So if you have a chance, we’d appreciate the votes! There’s some amazing groups/musicians/peers/friends in the running this year, and we’re stoked to even be in the same league!

That’s aboot all I can think of. My coffee to brain levels are subsiding and I should get back to Sunday funday chores. Oi.. So if I didn’t mention it before, then you guys should know that we love the hell out of all of you, and we thank you for continuing to support us through all the ups and downs, and help us make this our life.

See you all soon!
-Gerdo, Sherne & Murder (Don’t ask, just go with it, hahaha..)

Welcome to the new TheYounguns.com!

Hi, everybody! Welcome to the new website! It’s a complete overhaul from the last one and has been a labour of love, so I hope you all like it. Special thanks to Tim’s very talented daughter, Savanna Reardon-Cannaday for all the help with it. It otherwise probably would look like a complete swap-meet right now! Hahaha.. Visit her portfolio website online at www.savae.ca to see her other websites & artwork.

We also have a new addition to the band. Please welcome Shane Sperling as The Young’uns’ new bass player. Check out his bio in the “About the Band” section. Brad is currently playing with new Kelowna band, LINUS. We wish him all the best, and hope to be sharing a stage with him again very soon. Check out their Facebook page here!

Feel free to check out all the all the new content, as well as our updated schedule. There is promotional material with some new stuff on the way very soon, including new sound clips, photos and band bio, so keep your eyes open!

Thanks to everyone for your continued support! 25 years and going strong!

Cheers,

– Tim, Shane & Don \m/.
